How do you incorporate family members and siblings into a newborn or first birthday photoshoot?

DY STUDIOS

Incorporating parent and sibling portraits adds emotional depth to the session and creates a richer, more meaningful memory. I recommend that families take part in some photos with their baby before the cake smash portion, allowing for both individual moments with the baby and family portraits. Siblings can participate by holding the baby or sharing a laugh, capturing candid, natural moments that feel relaxed and less stressful for parents. This approach helps avoid the pressure of trying to get everyone to pose perfectly.

Typically, we start newborn sessions with baby-only shots and save sibling or family portraits for the end. This way, if the baby is awake, they can be held by family members, making it easier to capture the moment. We save props and posed shots for when the baby is more likely to be asleep.

Be sure to communicate with your photographer in advance to plan for these group shots, as well as discuss wardrobe options. A wardrobe consultation can help ensure everyone is coordinated and comfortable. Feel free to share any inspiration images you have, as this will give me a better idea of the style and types of posing you'd like to incorporate for your family.
